This is so common, and not just with R. (Less with R, I think.) People should NOT feel compelled to update software "just because."

Another good reason for using projects like @eddelbuettel's r2u with {bspm} for Ubuntu, or cran2copr for Fedora with the built-in {CoprManager}: smooth and fast updates of R + packages. Everything just works. :)

Very related: description of @Google's Linux distro now uses rolling @Debian releases at weekly frequency, as opposed to bi-annual @Ubuntu LTS releases taking a year to deploy firm-wide.
"Rolling" incremental updates are the way to go for #Rstats too.
