A simpler solution may be to run `update.packages()` daily (or close to it) and to trust both CRAN on the examplary work they do, and stick with packages that won't break you.
There. That "just worked" for me for 25 years with #RStats. These days I even get binaries via r2u.
I have a bad habit of not paying attention to the version of packages I'm using in #Rstats. Then I'm surprised if a package is updated and things break. Want to know how to keep better track of your packages and their versions? Watch the latest Code Club

New quick `r2u` demo: spawned by the SO question below showing how to install package `raster` plus all its dependencies as binaries in one quick command that run in under 20 seconds. #rstats#rspatialstackoverflow.com/a/72946019…
Hi @RConsortium: Any news on the R Hub Builder status? It is a key service for the #Rstats community and one of you high-profile activies. The complete silence is a little worrysome. Can we get an update?
PSA: @AchimZeileis is a saint. We both noticed yesterday that #Rstats package `BMisc` moved off CRAN for a minor issue ("Suggests not tested) which pulled more packages off with it. But as the man never sleeps here is his extra-clean PR to update `BMisc`:

Welcome to town! You could start here: meetup.com/chicago-r-user-gr…
There is a meeting _in two days_ you could attend. Besides the RUG there is a lot more on the ground #Rstats activity, but it is not always aggregated or coordinated.

This works outside of @Docker too: it is "warp speed" (nice choice of words I may borrow some more) for *any* @Ubuntu-based #RStats deployment. Laptop. Server. Cloud. Whatever.
Timed install of #tidyverse + #shiny (plus helpers) + #Seurat + more earlier today: under one minute.
Notice that I am using the eddelbuettel/r2u based image by @eddelbuettel that brings previously unimaginable warp speed to the docker build process.

Hi all, unfortunately we temporarily need to stop our Windows and Linux builders, to sort out some billing issues. Hopefully we'll be able to turn them back on soon. We'll tweet here once we have more information.

There is a active community of users on the PrairieLearn slack instance (which is IIRC open); my course uses an #Rstats autograder container setup described a little in this paper

Aren't the ships hanging off the cathedral ceiling something? Truly maritime. And yes, the view isn't too shabby either,
And maybe the ships inspire you to let betahats hang off the ceiling at the next ESTIMATE?
Or (on suitable systems) install binaries and don't compile at all: with `bspm` it works with `install.packages()` _and still gets you binaries_. See my r2u for Ubuntu, @enchufa2's cran2copr for Fedora, @detlef_steuer's for OpenSUSE ... #RStatseddelbuettel.github.io/r2u/
View outside my dining room window yesterday on the way to a re-run of the coffee machine. We live in what is called around here the 'near west' burbs and you and I could run to the Loop from here on a decent day as it is about ten miles as the crow flies ....
As former @amseaixmars graduate student (though it was then called #GREQAM / @EHESS_fr) I fully endorse this picture, and miss the Veille Charite you get to be at for the conference. I only wish you were there to teach #Rstats instead 😉
No. But many people use @Docker for that purpose, and the paper by @nordholmen et al gives you ample pointers to project / packages helping _you_ to 'freeze' and 'conserver' _your_ #Rstats setup today or at other times. Or you can do it 'manually'.

What is wrong with
a) sudo apt install r-cran-rjava (easiest)
b) sudo apt-get build-dep r-cran-rjava (in case you still insist on source)
as it is entirely possibly to satisfy Java needs with distro packages. Also see stackoverflow.com/a/3325468/…
One the nicest things about open source is reading about yet another nice tool (example below), then checking the repo README and realizing ... that it is just an `apt install` away.
So a big big Thank You! to fellow distro maintainers for making all of our lifes easier.
Sounds like a job for the anytime package -- it will happily convert from any reasonable format to Datetime (ie POSIXct) or Date -- without the need to supply a format string.
