It is a really wonderful example, describing over 3 1/2 pages how S3 classes can be lightweight and effective for the right problem size. The book is from 2000, which is when I bought my copy. I once heard rumours of a 2nd edition but that was years ago, and never happend.
Sometimes the classics, e.g. S Programming by Venables & Ripley, give the best examples. Great practical breakdown of an S3 class without relying on decomposing the `lm` object (and, that's quite a rabbit hole). Thanks @eddelbuettel for the heads up.

R packages binaries for prior releases can be incompatible with R 3.5.0. Hence implications for use of r-cran-* @Debian / @Ubuntu packages, eg from the @marutter PPAs, via @TravisCI (@Ubuntu 14.04), on @Docker etc. See stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-sig… for more and discuss there.

R 3.5.0 is out, and Debian packages have been uploaded to "experimental". We will get a binary transition going for the required package rebuilds.

R/Finance 2018 registration has been open for a few days; see the blog post by @joshua_ulrich at the link below. The is a serious shortage of hotel rooms due to a large medical conference. So think AirBnB, UIC dorms, or other alternatives! I'll auction off our guest bedroom :)

And if you are lucky enough to be on a system that uses @Debian / @Ubuntu packages, I have an an unofficial ("binary-all" and no dependencies) font package here for you: github.com/eddelbuettel/pkg-…
The @FiraCode font has some lovely ligatures for your R code -- arrows, inequality, and more as smooth, single glyphs. Here's how to use it in @rstudio! #rstats

A current 'beta' (from last eve, r74578) is in @Debian "experimental" release. Please test.
A reminder that #rstats 3.5.0 is currently in beta and enters Code Freeze on Monday. I.e., bugs not discovered within this week WILL appear in the released version. So do test it if you want to have an influence on it.

As @joshua_ulrich would say: "lightweight is the right weight". Keep your dependencies down, keep it simple (enough) and make sure it works. (I haven't been maintainer of RPostgreSQL for years (Tomoaki is), but use it daily.) nitter.vloup.ch/pachamaltese/sta…
