macro_rules is annoyingly parse-order scoped rather than lexically scoped. make sure your macro is *before* its use in your codebase's parse order.

Also I definitely count it as 'fortunate' - my family has always been interested in how people think because my parents were both teachers, so were used to needing to empathise with differences in how people learn.
I wonder if I'd think of it as a mental power - I guess it's why I often find thinking about code easy, it's just lists of instructions. What I find very hard is persuading myself to plan diagrams into design documents etc. because they're of basically zero use to me.
