It was a fail-safe security issue, they've already sorted a fix and are rolling it out.
Be grateful that it was an annoyance, rather than a fail-unsafe leaving you vulnerable.

It all depends on how she got hurt. If, for example, it was entirely her fault, then you're only due a financial reprimand (in the form of cat treats) and some basic remedial training. If she hurt herself as a direct result if your actions/inaction then death is due.

It's not great, but that's what you get for using a convenience API. If you used the thread builder API you'd get the io::Result object and could handle the error rather than it panic!()ing.
