We had a cat who used to jump on our glass coffee table. One day we had the glass off the top for cleaning and she jumped straight through it.
She got used to that, and then when we put the glass back on, she ended up standing underneath it and jumping up into the glass *CLONK*
I think, for the empathy you're seeking, you have to look to FOSS *authors*. Only people who've been through the emotional rollercoaster of looking after FOSS are likely to properly understand what it takes :(
(Where I think almost anyone can empathise with "work for money")
While I'm not certain, I'd guess this is, in part, due to the "If I paid nothing for it, it's worth nothing" combined with "If you don't charge for it, clearly you *want* to give it away and thus you *want* to satisfy me and my needs for nothing."

Client: "Three days in and I realize it will be a very short honeymoon. I'm starting to think that large groups of people trying to get things done are dysfunctional by default."

The "return to work" line being pushed by the government is deliberately disingenuous.
It's meant to convey an image of metropolitan laziness to their base and try and trigger guilt in those at home.
I'm working damn hard at home.
The correct phrase is 'return to the office'.
