Example: Someone tells you "Oh, they got a 'pattent'!" You're surprised.
Do you say "Really? A paytent!?" if you're American, or do you say "Really? A 'pattent'?"

Doing either feels like it could seem mocking, either as making fun of their pronounciation, or trying to correct them by saying your other one.
