Language and converation-related poll: When you repeat something someone says (in a non-mocking way, like for clarification), do you repeat their pronounciation (for words like patent/"paytent") or use your preferred one?

Example: Someone tells you "Oh, they got a 'pattent'!" You're surprised. Do you say "Really? A paytent!?" if you're American, or do you say "Really? A 'pattent'?"

Doing either feels like it could seem mocking, either as making fun of their pronounciation, or trying to correct them by saying your other one.

As someone who has to fight his tendency to mimic the accent of the person he's talking with anyway, I think it can come across as more condescending/mocking if the other person *knows* you wouldn't pronouce the word that way normally.
