The longer I work with people remotely, the more I hate having long conversations by IM (HipChat, Slack, whatever)

Surely long conversations are what email+mailing lists are for?

Even that is incredibly tedious after a while and adds far more latency to the conversation.

So you don't want to use email, and you don't want to use IM. What on earth would you prefer?

You are lucky to be able to do that. I find it impossible to both participate in a discussion *and* take notes. I can do one or the other.

I try and pause the conversation occasionally so that I can keep notes thorough. I struggle with it too.

And this is why I prefer mechanisms which *start* in written form :-)
