Erm, or use them non-blocking?

Maybe joke went over head, but to answer anyway, there's no nonblocking way to use stdio.

if you mean ANSI FILEβˆ— streams then I suppose not. But then again there's no threads in ANSI C either.

I'm pretty sure there are more computers running multithreaded programs than using hierarchical filesystems

Mmm perhaps, though at that point, stdio is hardly worrisome :-)
