It is interesting that 'good managers are never deep in the code' is widely accepted wisdom, but in OSS, we expect our leaders to be primarily technical

For me, management and leadership are two very different skillsets. Sometimes they vest in the same person; but usually I wouldn't expect managers to be deep in code; just like I wouldn't expect team leads to be trying to write project plans and delivery schedules.

I think FOSS projects often suffer for a lack of 'true management' because a TL ends up expected to do the bare minimum of management functions while also being a team lead, and that isn't great.

Yeah, exactly, this is the well known result of having a single track promotion ladder in a company, but some how we expect this to just work in open source

I have found a lot of "coders" entirely ignore the value of project management because they don't understand it very well. Perhaps that attitude leaks into FOSS projects, only for them to discover a need for certain things and then have to do them as coders not PMs & thus badly.
