Dear my mac friends, is there an equivalent of `strace foocmd` I can run on a mac which doesn't require root, or at least runs `foocmd` as me ? I really miss `strace`.

dtruss may be the thing you are looking for. Also, you can disable the System Integrity Protection for dtrace only, instead of completely, allowing more things without root:
