It's amazing and sad to me that we have to make caring about others compulsory, as hardly anyone chooses to otherwise. Most people will apparently choose their own comfort over caring about others.

Nuance, because Twitter: The context here is a relatively full, long-distance train. There *are* other people choosing to wear masks, but most people are not. There's specific edge cases with masks. They probably don't apply to majority of the other passengers on this train.

Up until last month VR had mask mandates on all long-distance trains. They dropped it to a recommendation mid March. In 2020 Finland was doing better about this; recommendations were followed. I cannot explain the shift I'm looking at right now.

Maybe I am incorrectly applying Helsinki culture to the Pohjoiset / Pohjalaiset. Maybe these folks are less afraid because it just didn't hit as hard in the north. I guess I'll see what the Helsingilaiset are doing in a few hours.

AFAICT, despite my personal monkeysphere and general twittersphere etc. people in a general sense are bloody awful selfish beings with little to no sense of community or care for others. I am flying to NYC on Monday and I'm terrified of what that plane will be like.

Right? I know lots of lovely people! It just makes it that much weirder when I go out and the general average is... just not bothering to think about how they affect others at all. I have one friend who stayed home nearly all of 2020 because he could and it helped others.

Indeed. I still have friends who basically self-isolate in order that they can provide assistance to clinically vulnerable people - and other friends who go to the pub regularly but always outside, and never if it's crowded, etc. Wearing a mask to order, and so on.
