I always start with two words which cover common letters. I find that helps

Yes I do too. But the word that was desired in this one didn't contain any of those :-)

Oh dear. I start with octal and then siren -- what do you start with?

It's worth having a second "start" word using the other vowels and so on. octal+siren covers a lot of the common english letters, and 4/5 vowels.

My "solver" starts with 'aster' but it has the advantage of a computer's speed with word elimination :D
