"Code is documentation" yes it's the documentation of last resort and should never be a substitute for accurate and complete documentation that's actually readable

If I have to figure out how to interpret a spec by reading the source code of the implementation, the spec is inadequate

I'd go further and say that a spec which doesn't have clear executable tests is also inadequate. And by executable tests I'm more thinking gherkin style acceptance tests than unit tests.
