I just discovered that my partner has never consciously noticed the banding present in dark scenes in the relatively low bandwidth compression used in online streaming services and now we're trying to work out if this is a generational thing

I grew up with film and Real Player codecs that accentuated every single compression artifact and so I'm very attuned to the difference, while they mostly grew up with worse codecs than we have now and it's just part of how video looks to them?

So now I'm worried that everyone older than me doesn't see it because they never spent time watching the in-between phases, and everyone younger than me doesn't for the same reason, and I'm just doomed to notice banding in every dark scene for the rest of my life
