Lately I keep finding when I reply to a tweet, once it's posted it's replying to multiple people, which it didn't show when composing. Not sure if it's a bug between Tweetbot <> Twitter API, or some weird Twitter change.

I've just discovered what this is: apparently Twitter now lets you tag people in photos and replies @ mention the tagged people once posted, but Tweetbot doesn't know about it.

Eww that's nasty. OOI how does that interact if you've used up all your characters? Is it actually @$foo in the text, or is it the out-of-band @$bar approach?

I think Twitter stopped treating mentions as part of the character count some time ago, so I think it's the out-of-band thing. e.g. in replying to this tweet it says "replying to @dsilverstone" - for these tagged tweets I see it say the poster and the tagged person.

That's bloody awful. I wonder if tweetdeck does as bad a job of telling you who you're replying to.

tbh this is probably another case of Twitter implementing new features and refusing to expose it through the API, so third party clients like Tweetbot can't know. They're doing this more and more.
