STM32s have a 96-bit device ID that they suggest can be used as a security key, except it's derived from the location of the part on the wafer and the lot number, and some of those bits are guaranteed to be 0

I think they mean it's a number guaranteed to be unique per device. So can be used to key in the sense of 'look up' or 'identify' but as you say, not in the sense of 'authenticate'
