A Google blog post titled "Charting a course towards a more privacy-first web" starts with the sentence: "It’s difficult to conceive of the internet we know today ... without advertising as its economic foundation." It's really not.

It's difficult for me to conceive of today's 'internet' without advertising; but easy for me to conceive of something as capable as today's web, better for users, and devoid of advertising.
