If a power supply is rated for (say) 500W, and your device requires a fraction of that (say 80W), would it be less power efficient than one rated nearer the requirement?

In other words would a significantly over specified PSU mean more power consumption. thanks for any help!

AIUI, a higher rated load does not mean lower efficiency. Look for platinum rated units.

There will be a sweet spot for efficiency. Below a certain point and the PSU might be wasting energy to keep stable. Above a certain point and efficiency tails off as things heat up and reach limits. Somewhere in the middle, the supply is nice and stable, well within limits.
