I’ve never charged simply because the conferences I’ve spoken out had no funding to pay, which is fine.

I've accepted sponsorship in order to attend and give a talk, but said sponsorship has never covered all my costs. As Martin says, it's fine, if I want to talk, I'd rather talk somewhere it's appreciated than somewhere throwing money at the speaker problem.
