cf. nitter.vloup.ch/devcurmudgeon/st… when someone says "My code is too clever/complex for you to understand" it can be related to a number of things. They might honestly think that they are cleverer, they might be ashamed of the quality or legality of the code. What do you hear?

I'm getting rather sick of folks saying "our code is really complex, you won't be able to help/understand". We're Codethink, for fuck's sake!

"Our code is an amalgamation of developer idiosyncrasies that would take a several months of initiation. We're not ashamed of it, although we have a sinking feeling that we should be, but we can't articulate why because we've never seen robust composable abstractions."

*Just once*, I hand-wrote a gnarly optimisation so obtuse and specific that the comment was basically "This does X and is ultimaintainable. If you need to change it, rewrite from scratch."
