I've deliberately not read -private in nearly a decade -- as a result, I'm blissfully ignorant of a lot of the horror under the covers.

I completely understand that. I've had to make the decision to prioritise my own mental health over knowing/leaving things which upset me, because otherwise I'd basically gibber to myself in a cave somewhere until I starved to death
