I thought of each board as independent (a struct) and then had a vec of boards, but generally I only considered boards alone except when processing the final ordering for the solutions. Sometimes taking a shortcut of the form "no need for a struct here" leads to painful types.
Strong typing isn't a good reason to lack this kind of thing - it's more likely because of Go's lack of generic types that it's unable to do this in a nice standardised manner. Rust's Iterator trait has a `.sum()` (or in this case a `.count()`)
