"The United States has done more than any other country to popularize the idea of free expression and to champion the rights of the free press. The time has come for us to fight for those ideals again," says A. G. Sulzberger, the publisher of @nytimes. nyti.ms/2mEvdxH

One of the things I remember from my first trip to Japan -- maybe even the first day -- was a man riding a bicycle on the sidewalk while holding an umbrella and smoking a cigarette. (One hand for the handlebars; the other hand for the umbrella and the cigarette.)

Governor Newsom very quietly announced a major reprioritization of state transportation spending today. Reading between the lines, the Governor is directing the state’s annual $5 billion in STIP (new stuff) *and* SHOPP (maintenance) spending to incentivize infill housing.

"would like to find some time to work on this" != "working on it", unfortunately...

But if the goal is to get to a majority before the convention, it requires more than a third of the delegates in each state...

Ugh, Massachusetts' Dem SOS Bill Galvin has endorsed California-style "top-two" even though there's an ongoing effort to put an instant-runoff voting initiative on the 2020 ballot. Background on why top-two is terrible: dailykos.com/stories/2018/2/… wwlp.com/news/state-politics…

I have research showing that Top Two reduces the probability of woman candidates being elected to state legislature. Especially Democratic woman candidates.

I’m taking the train to LA, something I always enjoy because I get to see California. From the train you can see Empire, CA, this rural agricultural community near Modesto. Here’s why San Francisco’s housing laws are more regressive than Empire’s and why we need SB 50. (1/18)

At 3pm it's 29° and 66% relative humidity (RH). The dewpoint is 22°, which means that it would be 90% RH if the temperature were 24°. Dewpoints are a better reflection of perceived humidity than RH. (22° is quite humid but not super humid.)

Currently watching a Nassau-registered cruise ship called "Quantum of the Seas" dock at Hakata Port's international passenger terminal the day before @w3c #tpac2019 in Fukuoka, Japan. (Reminds me of @firefox Quantum!)

Ugh. I had to remind @torgo last week that not having an umbrella wasn't a big deal because the rain wouldn't make him cold.
