A fascinating look from @cynduja at the Trump administration's erosion of the H1-B visa program, keeping skilled immigrants teetering on the edge of uncertainty and possible unemployment:

They're also really easy to propagate. Cut branches off an existing one, stick them in a pot with dirt, and water the pot a little more than usual the first month. This is how I currently have 5 of them in my apartment despite buying 1. (Maybe gave 1 or 2 to friends too?) 2/2

Plants like the ones in the second and fourth pictures definitely don't need a ton of light -- best kept out of direct sunlight, although a decent amount of indirect light in the room is good. 1/2

Reckoning with the affordable housing shortage in cities like SF and Seattle means reckoning with the longer history behind it. My latest for @nytopinion.
We look to Big Tech to solve the housing crisis, when the solution involves things only government — and voters — can do, like changing land use rules and tax laws, says @margaretomara nyti.ms/2r1TGPZ

Name another product that 1) is known to be deadly, 2) is designed to be deadly, 3) is advertised in ways that encourage deadly behaviors, 4) kills more humans under 40 than anything, & 5) faces literally no consequences from regulators. Cars occupy a very unique product space
Teens die in 116mph tesla crash, parents sue, Tesla spokeswoman said “unfortunately, no car could have withstood a high-speed crash of this kind." The top speed of this car is *130mph.* Why are cars that can't withstand a 116mph crash able to go faster? sun-sentinel.com/local/browa…

The annual public cost that a city bears for each suburban home is more than double that of each urban infill home, concludes @SP_Inst. And that’s before factoring in the costs of big consequences like the #ClimateCrisis. #CityMakingMath

If I had someplace to throw food waste to compost, I'd do that. What I'm wondering is whether putting food waste & soiled paper in a municipal compost bin is actually a win, or if it's a loss because of the energy needed to break down the "plastic" forks/cups mixed in with it.

How effective is composting? I've heard (from a friend not in the field, but who did a bit of research on the topic) that commercial composting is energy-intensive to the point that, at least from a carbon footprint perspective, we'd be better off putting it in a landfill.

Forecast models are trending slightly wetter with the cold storm system due to impact the #BayArea and Central Coast from Tue afternoon through Thanksgiving. Most areas expected to pick up 0.50-1.50" of rain, with up to 2" forecast for the coastal mountains. #CAwx

Forecast models suggest it could get quite smoky tonight in the San Francisco Bay Area as winds bring a lot of smoke down from fires in Oregon. I'm hoping this will be the last big blast of smoke this season thanks to the rain that's coming.

The Wednesday-Thursday rain forecast (ok, arriving a little before the holiday weekend) is starting to look firmer, and likely to move down the whole CA coast. It looks like there's a decent chance at a second storm Sunday-Monday as well, although that could stay to our north.
