Does Taipei have land value taxes? I was under the impression that property taxes there were effectively indistinguishable from zero (i.e., similar order of magnitude to what Californians pay for vehicle registration).
(Otherwise a huge fan of Taipei, though.)
🚨New paper🚨 with @conornomics and Jacob Burgdorf (papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.…). Using alc. cons. measures from BRFSS, we find that the intro of ridesharing services such as UberX significantly increase drinking. Effects are largest on heavy drinking and binge drinking.. 1/N
So while I'd gladly sign a petition to tax Apple a few tens of $ billions to help "solve" the housing crisis, it's money wasted if we don't do the deeper work of legalizing fully integrated communities -- by legalizing affordable homes in high-opportunity zones in our cities.
I'm sort of amused that these numbers are so precise... yet the totals of the two proposals differ by 13.
(I'd have expected either 0 or a larger difference.)
W/ help from Congressional staffers & others in DC we managed to get CBP & ICE to let J into the US. But without an attorney CBP would likely have turned J back to danger in Mexico again. This isn’t the 1st time DHS has sent asylum seekers back to Mexico after winning their cases
That article has a significant rounding error. The proposition needs 66⅔%, not 66.6%... which means as of last count it's 12 votes short of what it needs.
So really, way too close to call until much more of the vote-by-mail is counted.
People have a very warped sense of what personal actions help to reduce CO2 emissions.
Highly over-estimated effectiveness:
- No more plastic bags
- Regional/seasonal food
Highly underestimated:
- No more meat

For what it's worth, current numbers have:
Pre-election vote-by-mail: Brown 54.5%; Preston 45.5%
Election-day (non-provisional): Preston 56.7%; Brown 43.3%
Right now VBM is 53% of D5 ballots and e-day is 47% of ballots.
I think it's reasonable to expect VBM and e-day voters to have different demographics (e.g., income, age, employment status, how well informed they are) that influence their choice of whether to vote by mail or in person and also influence their votes.
I think it's far too early to call the D5 race given how many vote-by-mail ballots are still to be counted, and the relative skew of the vote-by-mail versus election-day ballots.
