So, sure, *I* could afford to stay... but it wasn't clear how long the society I was staying in would continue to function.

It really starts to feel like the cost of housing would lead to some sort of societal collapse where many of the professions that society depends on would no longer be present in the region.

My experience was that having a kid made the whole thing feel even worse. Finding daycare was hard. Then I'd think about whether there would be young teachers willing to work in the Bay Area over the next 18 years, given the cost of housing. And doctors. etc.

Also, that may (??) be an expensive house price in the suburbs of Richmond, but it isn't one in the suburbs of DC.

And there's still a bunch of suburban office park construction happening in Rockville, filling in areas near Adventist Hospital.

A system like the UK's that has fewer checks and balances might help. The Tories don't campaign to end the NHS because the NHS is popular, and people know that if they wanted to end it, they could. US Rs campaign on things they don't intend to do; it gets the base excited.

Though there is always the warning about photography being forbidden during approach to Taoyuan Airport, which gives an expectation of it...

I don't think it's clear what about Firefox OS was a mistake in strategy versus a mistake in execution. (There were plenty of the latter.)
