Yeah, this. I tried paying for the MBTA by app and needed several tries before the transaction went through, 4 minutes past departure.
Every transit system I can think of that has an app for payment also has a stored-value card, which in many cases is superior to the frankly terrible and buggy apps.

My one good experience with a transit app was in Switzerland, where IIRC the same app worked on the national train network and also worked on many local buses. And the app actually worked, with integrated route search and purchase, etc.
