Is there a decent way to debug a Linux laptop that occasionally completely freezes for 1-5 minutes and then returns to normal?

Frozen down to no Caps Lock light. Tends to happen maybe either under low memory or heavy I/O.

I don't know how to debug / diagnose, but happens to me all the time when building stuff, and I can repro with dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/foo..
