Is there a decent way to debug a Linux laptop that occasionally completely freezes for 1-5 minutes and then returns to normal?

Frozen down to no Caps Lock light. Tends to happen maybe either under low memory or heavy I/O.

No video. If gnome-system-monitor was running, its graph just pauses updating through the whole pause. compiles/rsyncs make no progress.
