I think Google also does it asymmetrically, redirecting away from google .com outside the US, but not to it in the US.

IIRC each google.co.foo has its own special behavior. The UI for switching can be different.

(It's also possible that they've just changed their global behavior each time ive hit this issue)

India also defaults to English, actually, but on google.co.in, with choices (but not suggestion boxes) to switch langs

It's ... complicated. Ideally they should do it by region or something, if they're using geolocation.

Yeah, I'm assuming the alternative has to have regional variation with good geolocation.
