I think Google also does it asymmetrically, redirecting away from google .com outside the US, but not to it in the US.

If they did it symmetrically, I'd hope the US-based engineers would be more inclined to make remembering the user's choice work better.

IIRC each google.co.foo has its own special behavior. The UI for switching can be different.

(It's also possible that they've just changed their global behavior each time ive hit this issue)
