Can someone please explain to me why we need Slack altogether? It's closed & proprietary. Why not improve the IRC protocol?

How much is protocol and how much is implementation? @IRCCloud does many of the things Slack does.

Though, yeah, having history when you join an existing channel would need protocol changes
