I'm actually impressed it works in Firefox, even in more complex cases. This is not specified nor easy to make working.

Ok, spoke too soon anyway; doesn't pass all cases in Firefox either, depending on interpretation of spec

define --bg in one stylesheet and use it in your inline style, url will be relative to "wrong" root

What's unclear about current spec? Variables are token substitution, so relative to use.

Sure, but that is not useful. It means you cannot store images in variables reliably.
