I feel strangely detached from the US presidential election, as though I am not a participant (though with our voting system, I'm not)...

... but an observer, waiting to see whether I and millions of other Americans are still welcome in our home country.

Some risk being unwelcome for being not white, not Christian, not straight, or many other groups not part of the Republican "real America".

Many Jews have died over the last two millennia for being unwelcome in the country in which they were living. But many have moved elsewhere.

So I've started seeing this election not as a participant, but as a non-religious Jew waiting to learn...
