Direct democracy doesn't work because issues are complex, and voters are not professionals. That's why we elect professional representatives

it works reasonably well for Switzerland. Has to be part of the DNA though. You can't have direct democracy once per decade.

It's rather a mess in California, and we have direct democracy pretty often (though with lots of advertising).
