Maybe elevators should have a single "door open/close" button: holding it down keeps the door open, releasing closes the door.

My notion: have doors stay open when the elevator's not moving; every now & then you save the energy used to close & open them.

agreed, but it would be difficult to think of a proper pictogram for such a button.

I feel like most "door close" buttons on elevators are placebo anyway.
