i love San Francisco a lot but if you start to think about it too much it's extremely depressing thinking about the long term realities and restrictions of living in a VHCOL area

and obviously tech workers are very privileged and if even they are feeling squeezed it's a pretty dire situation. not sure what's going to happen here but it just feels hopeless that anything can really change for the better any time soon.

My experience was that having a kid made the whole thing feel even worse. Finding daycare was hard. Then I'd think about whether there would be young teachers willing to work in the Bay Area over the next 18 years, given the cost of housing. And doctors. etc.

It really starts to feel like the cost of housing would lead to some sort of societal collapse where many of the professions that society depends on would no longer be present in the region.

So, sure, *I* could afford to stay... but it wasn't clear how long the society I was staying in would continue to function.
