I don’t understand how to sign up for Mastodon. I have to choose a server? What happens if the people running the server take it down? Is my account just gone? Why do I have to distinguish between “game developer litherum” vs “social litherum” vs “tech professional litherum”?

There is a mechanism for moving an account to another server and I think most servers will have some notice they’re going away. screenrant.com/mastodon-chan…

My first Mastodon account, from a few years ago, is in fact gone. (Maintainer didn't want to deal with the spam.) I'm now on my second account.

You can always run your own server Myles 😉. Seriously though, there is a fundamental tradeoff here between centralization and decentralization. Perhaps not unlike choosing a web host vs. just uploading an app to the app store?
