And, yet, when I read the New York Times on the Web, the site tries to get me to switch to the app and requires me to tap away the annoyance to stay on the Web. I guess whatever NYT gets out of readers using the app outweighs the risk to journalistic independence.
Excellent point from @daphnehk. The unchecked power of app stores is staggering, and when I say "staggering" I mean "not afraid to threaten to remove one of the world's largest news apps from the store." What is journalistic independence living at the mercy of privatised infra?

That's a very good point and one with a simple explanation: I don't think that most people in digital businesses see the web as less subject to the power dynamics that prevail over app stores. We can debate whether that's exactly right, but I think it is directionally correct.

The Web isn't subject to the particular power dynamic described upthread and in the opinion piece: removal from the store.

Educating people on the power dynamics they encourage with their choices seems valuable, no? FWIW, here are my main access points for the news I pay for (respectively 2x subscriptions, tax, micropayments via PWA). All four push me to add a store to intermediate them. Worth it?
