These flat photos always look really scary and claustrophobic particularly for Western viewers but if you look at videos of Guiyang Huaguoyuan it gives a much more vibrant and ultra-modern impression. Here's a take from one of the residents from Reddit.

I think Chinese rules about access to green spaces (and sunlight angles?) are also quite harmful for walkability.
(But definitely agree that the urban highways in Shenzhen and Beijing are overbuilt.)
