To my friends at Apple and Google: you make your own choices and it's not my place to judge. But next time you think of yourself as working for the open Web, I hope you have the self-awareness to remember that this is on you.
Mozilla is laying off 250 people and is basically on life support. Their primary competitors:
* Bundle their browser in a leading operating system.
* Forbid alternative browser engines on their platform.
* Use their massive Web properties to drive downloads of their own browser.

Management everywhere has made a bunch of bad decisions. Some other companies have market and financial advantages that provide much more of a cushion to recover from those mistakes.
