One of my prior assumptions that I've now rejected as a result of the pandemic is that the average doctor has any understanding of statistics whatsoever.

I was really happy with one of my prior primary care physicians because at one of my appointments with him he explained to me, very clearly, a very relevant statistical concept (which I likely would have asked about anyway, but he did it unprompted).

I was taken off his patient rolls when he... became head of the internal medicine department at PAMF and reduced his patient count. I ended up moving to San Francisco shortly thereafter.

The relevant statistical thing was that X (which I had) causes some large portion of the cases of Y (thing I didn't want), but that's not actually scary since X is common and Y is rare, so the % of people with X who get Y is still very small (despite high % of Y caused by X).
