Been working from home for well over 7 years, and have determined that there is no residential service that is sufficiently reliable to do so. I maintain two connections at home (one is a very-low-cost 3 Mbps backup). Recommend this setup for long-term WFH.

Service reliability seems likely to be dependent on location. For example, in a city center, this seems less likely to be necessary. (Lines on telephone poles versus buried lines make a big difference, I think. But buried lines are prohibitively expensive where less dense.)

Our neighborhood's deed restrictions stipulate buried utilities; we're on the very edge of the neighborhood so ours come in from lines that are technically located in the next neighborhood over. But I do hear constant complaints from neighbors about cable going out when it rains.
