Google contacts has a feature for writing down someone's "phonetic name" and if you do that it shows up very clearly under their name and it looks fucking ridiculous phone, the reason I'm doing this is for YOU to stop mispronouncing my friends' names, not for ME

it's not even clear if the important Assistant stuff reads from this field at all, so maybe this is pointless

I guess the reason this feature exists is solely so that folks can remember how to pronounce names

multiple folks have pointed out this is used in Japan for kana but also everything on the internet says this is how you fix Assistant

If the field is being overloaded for multiple use cases there should be a way to hide it on the contact page it's ridiculous to have to SEE your friends' names spelled out really terribly every time you open the contact

I tried to use it for people who I have in my contacts with their Chinese names... but I think it didn't work for that use case and I gave up on it.
