Though we'd really be better off with more apartments downtown (and getting rid of the 50ft height limit) than with all the apartments along El Camino...

Why not both? And take one of the car lanes along el camino to run a rapid bus line. Also take the on street parking along el camino for a bike lane.

As to why not both: * having dense buildings laid out in a grid rather than a line is much more likely to create a walkable neighborhood (and a pleasantly-walkable one) * having more stuff near transit (i.e., Caltrain) & in walkable places reduces # living in car-dependent places
