Given that the USGS site has melted down I'm inclined to wait for the dust to settle so to speak.

The website seems to have recovered and they are indeed back up to 7.1.

The Richter scale is a (logarithmic) measure of energy released, so says as much about how much area was affected and for how long as about how strong it was at any one place & time. The Modified Mercalli scale is a better measure of how bad a quake is at a particular point.

Though I don't really know how they come up with "official" values for that. It seems the ones on the website are just estimated from reports.

Somewhere in there there's also a map with estimated MMI values... but the site isn't really working now. (I don't even see where you see the IX.)

The shakemap for that 7.1 #earthquake finally came through and I've never seen anything like it -- the shaking almost reached the Bay Area!
