I see a carbon copy-based credit card machine on the table. Some of our colleagues are too young to have seen those outside of emergency contexts... Speaking of which, most of the latest reissues of my credit cards don't have raised numbers anymore. Was that a problem?

It was a shortcut for people who wanted to use it. The person who checked me out just wrote down the number and expiration date with a pen.

I've used one exactly once, in a divey motel on the Florida coast where the credit card machines and the rooms probably dated to the 70s.
