If a browser is using 6GB of memory to render a webpage, it's likely that the webpage isn't all that simple.

Absolutely true. The websites and their designers are as much to blame for this as the browser makers.

Also most modern programs grab more memory than they need if it's available but will give it up if another program requests memory. This high usage on chrome but it runs fine on low memory systems.
