In 2017, Hudson County, NJ, permitted 10x as much housing per capita as Suffolk County, NY. The Bronx permitted more housing per capita than any other borough in NYC, although it was still half as much per capita as Hudson County.

Last year, San Francisco, Alameda & Santa Clara counties each permitted more housing per capita than any of NYC's five boroughs, Nassau, Suffolk or Westchester counties. Yikes!

What's the comparison on San Mateo County vs. inner NYC suburbs? That would be telling.

Er, except that needs adjusting for residents per housing unit, so 4-5 sounds reasonable, maybe even a tad high, for keeping up with population growth.
